Chapter 9

Shona

“Mm, this is to die for.” Gloria’s eyes flutter closed as she moans in appreciation over her last forkful of dessert.

I admit; coming to The Ivy was a great idea. We’ve eaten, drank, talked, and laughed. Like we do every time as part of our tradition. Having a friend like Gloria is what someone needs when they’ve been blown off by a bigshot director with a giant G-spot hitting dick.

I drain the last of my champagne.

Trent Forde has not been on my mind this entire meal. I won’t let him slink his way into my thoughts now.

“Shona, look.”

Gloria tips her head to her right, her eyes widening as she gives me a look that means, I’ve seen something scandalous and I’m holding in a squeal.

I look around, the reason for her reaction becoming clear, three tables away.

“I can’t believe they just flaunt it around so brazenly.” Gloria snorts in disgust.

I swallow the surge of bile that hits my throat as I stare across the room at our dining companions. Claudia flicks her long blonde hair over her shoulder and fawns over Ewan.

“This is LA. Shit happens all the time. They’re old news,” I mutter.

But that’s not true.

They aren’t old news to Trent.

Their deceit still affects him.

Gloria subtly turns to look again. Claudia is giggling now, her ass almost visible as her tight minidress rides up and she leans over the table to kiss Ewan on the mouth.

“He’s sexy in a down and dirty way… the shaved head… I get it,” Gloria says. “But he’s not a patch on Trent.” She screws up her nose as the sounds of their wet lips smacking together drifts across the room. “And I bet Trent doesn’t sound like that when he kisses.”

“No, he doesn’t,” I murmur.

Claudia’s hands have disappeared beneath the tablecloth. I turn away after she passes Ewan a scrunched-up ball of lacy fabric.

Gloria’s eyes widen.

“I know,” I whisper in agreement. “Talk about obvious. The whole restaurant just saw her hand him her panties.”

“No, no, no.” Gloria holds up a hand. “Forget Miss Screw-your-friend-behind-your-back over there. Rewind.”

“What?”

“Rewind to the part where you slipped that you have knowledge over Trent Forde’s kissing style.”

My brain scrabbles around for an answer.

“It was just a guess.” I cross my arms and look for a server. I need some water.

“Shona. We tell the truth, you and me.” She looks at me and the back of my neck grows hot.

She’s right. We do. Ever since that night she drove me and Mom to hospital—the night Josh got arrested, and then released without charge—we’ve never had secrets. She made me promise, because she wanted to help if Keith ever came back or tried to make contact again. He hasn’t, though. And we moved soon after. Mom wanted a fresh start, although she was also scared of him returning. She’s much happier where she is now. It’s a good neighborhood, and she has nice friends. Gloria moved, too. She often asks about Mom. Mom found the idea of staying in touch with anyone from her past too hard.
